Sean has grit for sure. At first it was a big deal that he swam one, then when he made it to the other side and saw he could do it he decided to swim another. Then I suggested that, since he was doing so well, that he try to work up to doing another three before we went home in a couple hours.  He wanted to do it right then. He made it to five and was proud because he was sure that was “the record for the whole, wide world.” Being Sean, however, the world’s record wasn’t enough - he had to have a buffer, so he swam another three. The last couple of laps blew my mind. He was so tired that sometimes he wasn’t moving forward at all, he was trying to but was only managing to stay afloat, but he never gave up. When he realized he was about to give it up he would get a glint in his eyes take a deep breath, go under & swim with all his might.  He got tired and overwhelmed and went under several times and he caught some water and choked a couple times. It scared me and I was ready to haul him out before he drowned himself, but when I tried he yelled, “I can do it” so I left him alone. Before we left the pool he had swum 12 altogether, but he only counted the consecutive laps. He was also very careful to do it right and wouldn’t touch the ground in the shallow end at all - he had to go wall to wall for it to count. I think it is amazing that a four year old can be so determined & so adamant about doing it perfectly - no fudging allowed. I am so excited to see what amazing things he will accomplish in his life if he is such a determined, fearless & hard-working person at 4.</p></blockquote> <p>My nephew y’all.
